Looking inside Dùska's Wabi-Sabi dreamhouse
In Almelo we find Duska's warm and unique home, where she lives with her husband Mark and youngest daughter, the eldest daughter has now left home. Duska is passionate about interior design and has been sharing her creative ideas on Instagram for eight years. Her home style combines various influences, including Wabi-Sabi and Bohemian, this exudes a warm and personal interior that inspires immediately. Time to take a look!
From 1970s house to warm interior
Four years ago, Dùska moved into this 1970s semi-detached house. Although the basics were good, creative adjustments and attention to detail made the house completely her own. For example, the wooden floor in the living room was put in dark oil and the upstairs received a new coat of paint. The finishing touch came in the form of a new kitchen. “The house immediately felt right; small adjustments already made a big difference,” says Dùska.
A Wabi-Sabi oasis of tranquility
The warm and cozy atmosphere in the interior is created by a personal mix of styles. The Wabi-Sabi living style plays a major role in this, imperfection and authenticity are central. Wabi means simplicity and modesty, while Sabi stands for finding beauty in impermanence and change. “I find it important that my interiors are individual and personal. Warm colors, natural materials and details such as gemstones and photographs really make the house a home.”
“I want people to come in and say, how cozy and warm it feels here. It doesn't have to be everyone's style, but the feeling of a warm welcome has to be right.”
Corner sofa Sommer as an eye-catcher
During the search for a new sofa, Duska ended up at By SIDDE. The choice fell on corner sofa Sommer in the color Oat Beige. “The coarse seams and fine seating make the sofa perfect for us. My husband likes to sit firmly, while I prefer to plop down. Corner sofa Sommer offers the best of both worlds.” In addition to comfort, color plays a big role. Oat Beige is an ideal base. It matches beautifully with the dark floor and at the same time feels light and warm. Even after two years, the sofa still looks like new.
Favorite places and items
Dùska prefers to sit in the corner of sofa Sommer. Here she enjoys herself with a blanket and a cup of tea. Other favorites include the shelving unit in the kitchen, her minimalist lamps and the corner with personal items such as gems and photos. “I am now more selective in what I add to my interiors. When something new comes, something old goes away. That gives peace of mind.”
Inspiration and interior desires
Inspiration for warm Wabi-Sabi interiors comes from everywhere: Instagram, Pinterest, vacations and even interior designers. “Everywhere I go, I see something I would like to apply at home,” she says. What's still on her wish list? A built-in fireplace or wood stove, a tiled wall in the kitchen and a sleek wall solution for the television.
Tips from Dùska
Dùska stresses the importance of following your own style. “Be inspired by social media, stores or vacations, but choose what really suits you. You don't have to follow all the trends; only what complements your warm interior.” She also finds balance in colors and materials essential for a peaceful feeling. “An interior should feel like a warm welcome, a place where you feel at home.” Finally, she advises making your home personal with items that have meaning. “That's what really makes a house a home.”
With her Wabi-Sabi style and personal approach, Dùska has created a warm interior that is not only beautiful, but also tells a story. Want to see more inspiring interior views? Then take a look at our 'Take a look inside' page!
